I loved the idea of a patrilineal society where the men give birth yes, it is mpreg. How will Preston and Layton manage parenthood, a rogue supernatural community that wants them dead and their families?
It is fresh, unique and features pairings that normally you would never think could be together. A lynx and a seahorse? What will the kids be like? Also, being a fan of mpreg, this one is done extremely well and believable as male seahorses in nature do carry the children. My only niggle with the book is that it is not a standalone, that you have to read the rest of the series to really grasp the whole plot and characters.
There is so much back-story in this universe, that the author has a spreadsheet available on her web site to explain it. And since I have only read two of the books in this series, I cannot comment on the beginning books, but this one was fun and amusing.

But, now that Layton has turned to him the truth emerges and their families and friends are in grave danger.
A well-written novella that has added more twists to the Mate or Meal series. When the truth emerges, their families uncover a plot to start a race war.
Preston has suffered watching his mate chase his brother, but now that he has his mate in his arms, nothing is going to separate them again. With the continuation of these stories, new plots emerge and old plots reveal their connections and they are really good.
Preston and Layton made a great couple and they had some really hot sex. The other characters added to the story well and I liked the new characters that were introduced as well. So I will recommend this to those who love shifters, a touch of angst, m-preg, twists, a really good story and a happy ever after.

One day I was browsing the Internet for nothing in particular and I saw a picture of two male seahorses carrying their babies not big in bioligy, but from what I understand, female seahorses lie the eggs and male seahorses carry the babies in their pouches until their are ready to leave the "nest".
The first one is more traditional if traditional can be used in a paranormal shapeshifter story Of course Byron and Skylar, the human version of them, are reflecting their shifted forms, and Byron is all domineering towards the cute and shy Skylar. Indeed, Byron and Skylar know each other, but Byron is trying to avoid Skylar as much as possible, not trusting himself near the fragile man.
But of course, as soon as Skylar needs protection, Byron will be there ready to claim his mate. It's a cute story and most of the focus is on the expected outcome, Skylar will get pregnant with Byron, and he will carry one little shark and one little seahorse. Maybe the nice twist is that, the baby shark will inherit his seahorse father attitude, and instead the baby seahorse will take upon his shark father, becoming in the end a spoiled brat young man, who will star in the second book, The Seahorse Who Loved the Wrong Lynx.
The second pair, seahorse Layton and lynx Preston is maybe more "strange" than expected, and in a way, it's odd to think two really different creature, one from the water, the other from the ground, can not only mix, but having babies together. But that is indeed a futile reasoning, this is paranormal fiction and everything is possible.
Layton and Preston's story is more comedy than that of Layton's parents; from Layton's bratty behavior to him getting knocked up the first time he had sex cause he wasn't considering the option. I was never sure who was talking. The grammar was incredibly poor, the dialog stilted and the background pretty much nonexistent too. There's a part where Layton phones Alexis and they're talking and suddenly Layton says Alexis is arching his eyebrow.
I mean, really? It can happen if it's a video call but no one said anything about that so Not as blatant but close and it was distracting as all hell.
And have I mentioned how much I hated first person? Really awful. Made me hate pretty much every character too. And yes, I know it's number 8 of a series but it's not a good excuse.
I've read other books in the middle of a series where some simple paragraphs managed to situate me just fine without any significant bumps. This was not the case. Alexis' 'kiss' from the last book actually served to 'cure' Layton of his obscured vision and made him realize Preston was his actual mate.
Once they decided to be together early in the book it was a strong solid mating with no doubts and stupid misunderstandings to waste time.
I loved this couple! The introduction of the Sidhe and Corbin's Scarlet did not drag out Layton's stubborn pursuit of Corbin. The introduction of the Sidhe and Corbin's future love interest is a great teaser. I am hoping Rhys gets his mate soon as I love how kind, brave and loyal he is.

It was a bit more anticlimactic then I thought it would have been but it is was still enjoyable. I was hoping Preston would make Layton work to make it up to him but this is a shifter series so yeah The plot keeps thickening and I for one can't wait for the next installment to see what else is going to happen to effect peacemaking among the different species. Why not just stick with young and confused? Why can't shifters suppress thier feelings and be mistaken? Clearly Preston had done so to refrain from taking action earlier yet Layton cannot be naturally lead astray by his youthful infatuation?
